[Review] Bloodrayne: Betrayal (PS3)

Bloodrayne Betrayal is brutal, bloody, and brilliant. Also beautiful, bellicose, bombastic… bespoke…

[Review] Thor: God of Thunder (DS)

This game was across many platforms, but WayForward handled the DS version with their usual aplomb. But for the sake of arbitrary comic book rivalry, how does it stack up against their Batman game?

[Review] Pikuniku (co-op) (NS)

image

I can only review the co-op portion of this game, having played it with my brother. It lacks the full off-beat story of the main game, but nevertheless is a delightful and charming physics-platformer.

[Review] The Divide: Enemies Within (PSX)

The Divide is very much of its time, but look past the shaky graphics and odd controls and you have a solid isometric Metroid-esque experience.

Rockman Zero & ZX, low-res pixel style!

In honour of the upcoming Legacy Collection of Inti Creates’ Mega Man/Rockman Zero and ZX games, here’s the major characters from the series. I call it the Pentuple Hero Collection, because the “double” in the Japanese title seems a bit limiting. Anyway I love these games very dearly, and my previous attempt to draw the Zero principals has turned to ash in my eyes! So here’s a cleaner and fuller take on these excellent games (plus a few additions from the manga adaptations)!

Zero: Zero, Ciel, X, Harpuia, Leviathan, Fefnir, Phantom, Lito, Cerveau, Neige, Cial, Elpizo, Craft, Copy X, Dark Elf with Crea & Prea, Omega, Dr. Weil

ZX: Aile, Model ZX, Vent, Girouette, Prairie, Fleuve, Sho, Prometheus, Pandora, Serpent

ZX Advent: Ashe, Model A, Grey, Master Mikhail, Master Thomas, Master Albert, Aeolus, Thetis, Atlas, Siarnaq

Back on the WayForward train, with a pair of games based on the 2008 Batman cartoon of the same name.

[Review] The Legend of Dark Witch 3 (3DS)

image

With no prior knowledge of this series, I picked the third one to try. It’s a labour of love, and competently constructed, and has some quirks of its own to keep itself from being too basic of a Rockman clone.

It’s always good to have a well-made Picross game. What a pleasant surprise for Konami to put out a competent one that draws on their history!

[Review] Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair (PS4)

I found Playtonic’s first effort a delight, and I was excited to see these characters return… doubly so for a somewhat DKC-inspired 2D romp!

[Review] Donald Duck: Quack Attack (GBC)

My friend Tonya, lifelong duck aficionado, chose this for our little game club this month. Well, they picked the console game specifically but I duked and went for the handheld tie-in, and I don’t regret it.

[Review] Ducktales Remastered (iOS)

image

WayForward days continue with this remake of a NES classic. I have no nostalgia for the show or game personally, so as far as I’m concerned it’s a perfectly cromulent cartoony retro-style platformer with a fun central gimmick.

[Review] Risk of Rain (NS)

This roguelike action sidescroller has something that’s right up my alley: tiny pixel art sprites! Also, I had some great chaotic runs playing co-op with my brother.

[Review] Demon’s Souls (PS3)

image

In what has become an annual tradition, I played another of From’s games for the first time. Demon’s Souls is slightly less refined than later instalments, but all the important factors are intact, making for a satisfying time.
