Donkey Kong Junior’s Journey

image

I made a video, showing Junior’s adventure to save his Papa. It’s gameplay footage I recorded of different versions of the game, from the arcade original to Game & Watch versions, and the extra kitchen level from the Coleco Adam prototype. And some maths to round it out.

[Review] Megaman Xtreme 1 & 2 (GBC)

image

I wanted more handheld Zero so here’s the equivalent to the Classic GB games. X had his own handheld spinoffs, with mainly reused content from the first three X games. There’s some oddities to the structure but they were adapted well to the lower-fidelity format.

Super Mario World guide comics

image

It’s another scanlation of comics done from Ragey’s scans. Thanks Ragey (raw scans here and here)! Ape the company did a big 2-volume guide for Super Mario World, which is of course a big, important game.

The guide has a lot of fun extras but also quite a few comics, split over the 2 books. I’ve mixed them up and put together the ones that go together, with the story comic under the Volume 1 cover and the 4koma and bonus bits under Volume 2. The story part is by the wonderful Benimaru Itoh, and part one was actually in English already, which made my job easier. The 4koma strips are by Sensha Yoshida, Tamakichi Sakura (AKA Charlie Nozawa), Yukio Sawada, and Isami Nakagawa, in order of appearance. Some of these are read Western-style left-to-right, others Japanese-style right-to-left. I’ve added arrows at the top of the screen when reading direction for a section changes.

Please enjoy the colourful artwork and the silly jokes. Yoshida’s first strip opens the 4koma section with a very crude joke, and later there’s one that references a Japanese singer which I’m sure I didn’t fully grasp, but there’s some real gold in here and hopefully you get a kick out of it.

[Review] Mega Man Zero 2 (GBA)

image

I love this game too much to say much about it. I first played it back when my friend brought a copy back from a trip to Japan, and together we tried to master its story and mechanics. I chose it for game club this month, and feel personally accomplished to have completed it fully now.

[Review] Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens (PS4/3DS)

image

Me and the wife, we’re always playing Lego games. We even did a one-off stream of this one together. With the main Traveler’s Tales studio on Dimensions duty, the development here was handled by TT Fusion, who normally does the handheld ports. So is TFA able to hang with the rest of TT’s output?

Anonymous asked: Could you maybe scan that one Club Nintendo German comic where Mario fights against a couple of Street Fighters characters? It would be fun to actually know what they're saying ^_^

Hi there, thanks for the interest! First up, I don’t really do scans, I usually take stuff I find elsewhere on the Internet and translate it. But I can help you with the Street Fighter/Mario comic! My buddy Cryomancer’s team over at Opentrain translated that one into English a while ago. You can find it at their blog in the 1992 Club Nintendo release. But don’t stop there, they’ve translated lots of cool stuff from that magazine and elsewhere.

And please do use my spreadsheet that I use to track Club Nintendo translations; the links at the very bottom of the sheet will take you to Opentrain, to a full archive of raw magazine scans, and to my curated collection of translated CN comics. Enjoy!

[Review] Zoids Dash (DS)

image

Zoids is one of those franchises that I engaged with pretty strongly. We had a handful of model kits that I enjoyed building with my brother, watched Chaotic Century and New Century avidly, and played the heck out of the Zoids Saga RPGs on GBA in both Japanese and English. What can I say, it’s hard not to love robot dinosaurs, especially with some juicy anime melodrama on top!

[Comic] Super Mario Collection guide 4koma

image

Another quick comic scanlation here. Again thanks to Ragey I had nice scans of this official Nintendo guidebook (see the raw scans here). Ape (co-creators of Mother and Pokemon) used to do some totally sweet guides for Nintendo games, Japan only of course. This one is for Super Mario Collection (AKA Super Mario All-Stars) and features a few 4koma gag strips scattered throughout, containing some fun interpretations of the games in the collection clashing, or metatextual comparisons between “then” (the 80s) and “now” (the 90s).

There’s just seven strips which I’ve combined by author. The first three are by Sensha Yoshida and the next four by Tamakichi Sakura, a pseudonym of Charlie Nozawa, the illustrator of the Western-published Super Mario Adventures comic. One of the latter strips is a kind of tribute to Yoshiharu Tsuge, another mangaka that Nozawa must have respected deeply. Please enjoy and share.

[Review] Picross e8 (3DS)

image

I sure do love me some Picross! Luckily for me Jupiter continues to provide. However, there’s essentially nothing new in this version but for a new collection of puzzles to solve. Fine with me… in fact, just refer to my e7 review as the exact same collection of words applies perfectly to this instalment. Bool! The end.

[Review] N++ (PS4)

image

Funny to think I complained about this being a PS4 exclusive when I reviewed its predecessor. Now I do have a PS4, and the game has gone multiplatform. I actually bought it digitally before I even had the console, but only just now got to playing it. Oh it’s great by the way!

[Comic] Star Fox Dengeki pack-in guide comic scanlation

image

Got another manga translation for you. Thanks to Ragey (twitter and website) and his excellent scanning efforts I’ve found some fun video game comics from Japan. This comes from a Star Fox guide book included in a Dengeki magazine, I think; see the whole guide’s raw scans here. The comic is in full colour and read left-to-right, so very accessible for English readers. All I had to do was clean it up a bit and translate it to English, which I did with the help of Horseypope.

The comic is by Ayumi Konomichi, and although it’s short (2 parts of 4 pages each) it has some good gags and character-based jokes. I also included some illustrations from the guide that introduce the concept of polygons, and a 4koma strip from Famitsu that I also found recently, because why not?

So enjoy, and share! I included a few more-or-less direct quotes from Star Fox games in the translation where they would fit, see if you can spot them. And there’s more comics in the scanlation tag of this blog, or this Mega archive of all my comic work.

mushroomfusion245 asked: Breath of the Wild’s timeline placement has been revealed, Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition has BotW Link and Zelda, and Link’s Awakening has moved. I think it’s high time you updated that timeline of yours.

Eh, ok. I’ll work on it. The Hyrule Warriors thing is just costumes, it doesn’t constitute an actual appearance. I have a few other surprises though ;)
Thanks for your interest.

[Review] Overcooked (PS4)

image

I played this with my little brother over a period of weeks. Co-op is really the best way to play this frantic task management game, and the inventive level design and objective requirements keep you on your toes constantly. It can get stressful but the satisfaction of a job well done is worth it.
