Clone Wars Jedi, low-res pixel style!

After my art based on Star Wars: The Clone Wars, I felt there were many more Jedi I could have represented in the image. So why not do all of them? Here’s a selection of many of the most important named Jedi who were featured (with a visual representation) in Clone Wars-era stories. The first image is characters from the movies, the 2D or CG animated Clone Wars shows, and prominent video games. The second has Jedi from comics, books, tabletop RPGs, and more video games. The third is Jedi younglings or initiates.

Of course there’s some I had to skip, or that were more focused on Purge-era stories. But these images capture the diversity of races, costumes, and lightsaber colours that these characters of the Jedi Order have been depicted with.

1. Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano, Yoda, Mace Windu, Plo Koon, Kit Fisto, Aayla Secura, Shaak Ti, Luminara Unduli, Barriss Offee, Adi Gallia, Stass Allie, Saesee Tiin, Quinlan Vos, Ki-Adi-Mundi, Eeth Koth, Agen Kolar, Depa Billaba, Coleman Trebor, Jocasta Nu, Tera Sinube, Even Piell, Oppo Rancisis, Bolla Ropal, Ima Gun-Di, Nahdar Vebb, Tiplee, Tiplar, Rig Nema, Cin Drallig (movies/The Clone Wars show). I picked this one up from Japan pretty cheaply. I found the fifth game to be a fun time, so is this a step back? Well, maybe a step sideways.

[Review] Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (PS2)

Nearly finished folks. Unlike the DS tie-in game, the adaptation for consoles isn’t a graphical beauty, to say the least. It’s a perfectly cromulent game but… *yawn* sorry, what was I saying?

[Review] Pajama Sam: No Need to Hide When It’s Dark Outside (PC)

Game club this month took a look at one from Mitchell Wolfe’s childhood, the first Pajama Sam game from Humongous. Not being familiar with adventure games, this was a good introduction to the genre and especially the specific oeuvre of Ron Gilbert.

Shadows of the Empire, low-res pixel style!

This cross-media initiative was one of the more high-profile Star Wars spinoffs. Set between Empire and Jedi, it tells a new story with all your favourite character plus some brand new ones. Here are the new characters introduced in the novel/comic/game/action figures/trading cards experience that is Shadows of the Empire.

Xizor, the reptilian head of criminal syndicate Black Sun. Guri, his gynoid aide (based on her comic outfit as opposed to the one in the card game art). Dash Rendar, the braggart merc with Rebel sympathies. Leebo, his wisecracking droid companion. Big Gizz and Spiker, leaders of Jabba’s gang of biker thugs. Jix, the bare-chested Imperial spy who infiltrates said thugs. Koth Melan, the Bothan spymaster.

[Review] Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (DS)

Oops, this blog has become all Star Wars! Bear with me, it’s drawing to an end soon. So here’s something I never considered looking into because I don’t care for the latter two prequels. But when I saw the sprites on the back of the box in a shop I had to check it out!

To compare with my previous post, here’s some of the prominent female characters I found in the year and a bit of streaming I did before 2018. There’s a lot fewer when you’re not selecting for them! Such is the state of the medium on average. Still, I really attached to these ones. Not all of these ladies starred in their own game even but they stood out to me.

Tara & Kitnee (Ecco Jr.), Ariel (Ariel the Little Mermaid), Asha (Monster World IV), Jill (Jill of the Jungle), Phoenix Shadowalker (Shadowalker), Euri (Slap Happy Rhythm Busters), Marsa (Rakugakids), Classic Amy (Sonic Drift 1&2)

Heroines of streaming 2018 part 1, low-res pixel style!

I’ve been enjoying streaming this year. If you’re not aware, I stream (with commentary) a semi-obscure retro game every week that’s new to me at https://www.twitch.tv/miloscatter. This year in particular I’ve been choosing games that star female characters, and along the way here’s some of the cool women and girls I’ve discovered in the first half of 2018.

Row 1: Bubsy, who is a trans woman in certain fan works (The Woolies Strike Back, Bubsy Fangames Showcase part 2); Giana (The Great Giana Sisters); Annet Myer (El Viento, Annet Futatabi); Patience Philips (Catwoman); D’arci Stern (Urban Chaos)

Row 2: Mail (Popful Mail); Jill (Drill Dozer); Miria (The Guardian Legend); Vikki Grimm (Portal Runner); Lina (Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic)

Row 3: Anne (Jurassic Park Trespasser); Princess No-Knees (Narbacular Drop); Dixie Kong (Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble); Alice (Balloon Kid); Kitty (Hello Kitty World)

Row 4: The Girl (Tobu Tobu Girl); Mara Jade (Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith); Rianna Saren (Star Wars: Lethal Alliance); Ellen Ripley (Alien 3); Marlee (Second Chances)

Row 5: Valkyrie (Valkyrie no Densetsu); Layla and Iris (Layla); Lucia (Wing of Madoola); Lammy (UmJammer Lammy)

[Review] Getsu Fūma Den (NES)

For Game Club this month, Gibbon picked this Konami classic. Well, it seems to enjoy classic status, with ties to Yugioh, Castlevania, Wai Wai World, and Otomedius. It is well made, for a Zelda 2 clone, but with an unbalanced pace.

[Review] Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron (PSP)

image

I’ve played a version of this game before, on DS. As with Lethal Alliance, I figured the PSP version as the lead platform would give a better experience. Turns out that unlike Lethal Alliance there are pros and cons to both, and I ended up preferring the DS version! Note I left the multiplayer component—ostensibly these games’ selling point—completely untouched and just judged the campaign.

My Star Wars RPG party, low-res pixel style!

I’ve been playing the Star Wars: The Force Awakens Beginner Game tabletop RPG with a small group. You start on Jakku some time before TFA and shenanigans inevitably ensue.

This is our party: Mhar’li the brash pilot and blastslinger, Durm Bormo the exiled patriarch and teller of tall tales (that’s me!), Wol Kessix the incompetent Space-French spy (an NPC who stuck around; we gave him the appearance of unused PC Tiras Or’un), and Sherry the cocktail-dispensing droid that the GM gave us after my constant requests for a robot sidekick.

[Review] Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Jedi Alliance (DS)

Released alongside Lightsaber Duels for the Wii, this game also attempts to replicate the feel of a clash of sabers… but with touchscreen tapping instead of Wii remote waggling. I like the original plot, but the gameplay leaves something to be desired.

[Review] Bomberman Tournament (GBA)

image

June’s game for Game Club was this Bomberman spinoff, the second RPG-like of the series. It’s a light Zelda-style adventure game, with puzzley grid room dungeons separated by overworld sections and towns, plus a very tacked-on monster battling mechanic. The plot is poorly developed but it’s colourful and looks nice, and the mix of formulas makes a refreshing brew.
