The stream yesterday was pretty fun so I’m doing it again. This time it’s Lady Sia for GBA, starting in about an hour.

Sorry for the late notice but on a whim I’ve decided to try Twitch streaming since it seems a lot of people I know are doing it. I randomly picked Jet Set Radio GBA and will be starting in five minutes. Don’t worry if you miss it, it’s certainly nothing special!

Lost Rare heroes, low-res pixel style!

As a follow-up to my history of Rare pixels, here’s some characters who missed out on a starring role in a Rareware game. They had some good design work put into them, but their games were either reworked to remove them, or cancelled altogether.

Edson (from Project Dream which eventually became Banjo), Berri (supposed to be the deuteragonist of Twelve Tales: Conker 64), Velvet Dark (Joanna Dark’s sister, cameoed as a multiplayer character and was going to have her own spinoff that was cancelled), Krystal (another planned deuteragonist; when Dinosaur Planet was reworked into Starfox Adventures, Fox was given all her gameplay segments), Sabreman (in his design for the legendary Sabreman Stampede), Lilith (from the late Seavor game Urchin)

TOS isn’t super my thing, but I’m reading lots of Star Trek comics and lots of them are TOS soooooooo it’s fine. I prefer the movies, but still let’s round out the collection of pixel arts, shall we? I knew I wanted Arex and M’Ress from the animated series on here, and with the extra row I had some space so I threw in Nurse Chapel and Yeoman Rand. Why not? More ladies is good.

[Review] Sabre Wulf (GBA & Mobile)

image

Sabre Wulf couldn’t be more Rare, yet it seems to get overlooked. Its lush environments are almost DKC-esque, the music by Robin Beanland reminds me of Starfox Adventures, and the lewd jokes and silly characters are right out of Tooie or Ghoulies. Thanks Leigh. Of course coming from the handheld team there’s a slight roughness about it (and the occasional use of Comic Sans), but it’s also got charm in spades, and deserves to be mentioned towards the end of the same breath as all these other games.

I found the Rare Cow in Sabre Wulf GBA. Ayup.

EDIT: It’s a costume, found in the office of the mayor of Blackwyche. You give it to Captain Fingers, a salty old sea dog, to wear to a fancy dress party. He can be seen wearing it in the game’s ending, and apparently gets into character, exclaiming “Moo!”.

The Arcade Era Power Hour: Episode 002 - Stanley the Bugman

I was recently invited to guest on the Arcade Era Power Hour podcast by my buddy Gibbon of DK Girder! He runs a fansite dedicated to the Arcade era of Donkey Kong, and other Donkey Kong and pre-SMB-related Mario stuff, as an unofficial sister site to DKVine. We talked about Stanley the Bugman from off of Donkey Kong 3 for an hour and a half, and it was tons of fun! A barrel of laughs! Or maybe I was a bit awkward because I’m not great at podcasting.

Check it out if you like, or if not at least have a browse around DK Girder; Gibbon has similar sensibilities to my own in doing deep dives into the game stuff that he loves and making interesting connections. Fansites: they’re not dead!

[Review] Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai: Another Road (PSP)

image

Like many kids in my generation, I grew up with the English dub of Dragon Ball Z and GT on morning television before school. Fighting games are a natural fit for the series; able to have a wide selection of characters from the series’ cast, while trying to replicate the action that it’s famous for. Unfortunately fighting games don’t always agree with me too well.

This game was ultimately frustrating for me. Part of it was that I couldn’t git gud enough to beat the final mission, losing a half hour on each failed attempt. But part of improving at the game is not just practicing with different characters, but grinding for booster cards, getting lucky with or exploiting the opponent AI, and slogging through the map portions all while drowning in a sea of loading screens. Not to mention the incredibly sloppy proofreading on the script, but that’s just a nitpick.

I don’t want to be unfair to the game, considering my blind spot for “traditional” fighters. By all accounts this is a good example of the genre. I did have fun when I felt evenly matched with the AI. And when the plot went in unexpected directions—such as seeking out the dead Future Gohan in the Other World, snapping him out of his hallucinations of constant android battling with the help of dead Goku and Bardock, and him then somewhat mirroring present Gohan’s Buu arc—I was delighted. Having Cooler, Broly, and Janemba show up in the story is silly and fun. And the game looks great too.

My problem with the missions is how much of an endurance challenge they are. You fly around an overworld map, protecting cities from bad guys. A neat idea in principle, but every map essentially plays out the same and an unlucky matchup late in the mission can really set you back, all the while each clash has multiple lengthy loading screens transitioning to and from the battle mode and rewards screens. I struggled to understand these missions early on, came to really enjoy myself in the middle as the plot went in different directions and I got to grips with it, but by the end had too much frustration and resentment from the growing difficulty curve and my inability to keep up. And that’s even after finding a cheap strategy with Mr. Buu.

Oh I guess I didn’t explain that this game is a scenario outside the bounds of the series; it explores how Future Trunks would have dealt with Buu in his timeline. As such it’s a nice idea with the potential for fanservice, even before they start bringing in the movie villains and revisiting New Namek and the Other World. I really liked how it expanded in that way on what we’ve seen already, although the progress of the plot gets bogged down a little at times to account for more fights. I would recommend it for patient fans or if you have some skill at the other Budokai games, otherwise just watch that one scene from Super where they deal with the “Future Trunks Buu arc” scenario in literally 40 seconds!

Star Trek: The Original Series movies, low-res pixel style!

I never really cared for TOS, but the movies are good stuff. I like the continuity between the films, and the stories they tell using the history of the show as a basis for these characters. The six of them, together with the associated comics, are like another series of the show, but more modern. I wanted to include M’Ress and Arex from the animated series as they show up in Peter David’s enjoyable comic series set in this era, but decided to keep it to the core movie cast.

Modern Bubsy, low-res pixel style!

Modern Bubsy is a project that started with the indie game Space Funeral 4. SqrlyJack imagined what classic gaming failure Bubsy would be up to years later and the concept (also inspired by other Bubsy speculation) grew into an enthralling history including the games’ traumatic meta-textual making-of process, a gender transition, and contact with other 90s game mascots. It’s more than the shock humour you might expect by seeing it; Modern Bubsy is a deep and fascinating revitalisation of the character that may sort of kind of have the implicit approval of the original creator. What could possibly go wrong?

This pixel art is based on this post showing the “main characters” of Bubsy’s “current” life. Some explanation is required though…

Good Guys: Wild Woody is another failed 90s mascot, with a single Sega CD game to his name. Conker the Squirrel is one of Rare’s well-known mascots but in hard times, and now Bubsy’s boyfriend. Bubsy herself is down on her luck but is getting by. Bubsy/Bubster is another alternate take on the character from another Tumblr, and who is actually the son of “our” Bubsy. Oblivia is a character created for the animated series pilot, loosely based on the plot of the second game.

Bad Guys: Old School T represents Retroism/Tommo, the company that currently owns the Bubsy IP and who recently half-arsedly released the first two games on Steam. Sanic is a nightmarish version of Sonic from Space Funeral 4 based on Bubsy’s recollections of him tormenting her? I think? The Woolies are the alien antagonists of the first game and Bubsy 3D, who SqrlyJack also redesigned for SF4. Dr. Virgil Reality is the dweeb who invented the MacGuffin in Bubsy II/the animated pilot, and is now a rich Steve Jobs ripoff. Grubsy is Bubsy’s nasty brother, based on the P2 colouration in the first game; he is accompanied by the spirits of his dead children, Terri and Terry.
