[Comic] Castlevania: Curse of Darkness official 4koma, unofficial scanlation, Part 1

Again the 10-photo limit means I have to split this up. These comics by Shizumon originally appeared in Japanese on the official Curse of Darkness website for Japan, and I’ve translated them. Thanks to Castlevania Realm for archiving them.

My name for Part 1 of this comics set is “Hector mistreats and is mistreated by his Innocent Devils”. Poor Mr. Fairy.

[Comic] Castlevania: Harmony of Despair official 4koma, unofficial scanlation, Part 2

I can only post 10 at a time, and there’s 11 of these, so here’s the last 5 (first 6 here). As with other Castlevania games, there was a set of 4koma by Shizumon published on the official Japanese Harmony of Despair website. I wanted to read them too, so I translated them. Alucard is great, and I love the surprise return of silly old Julius.

[Comic] Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin official 4koma, unofficial scanlation, Part 2

Following Part 1, here all the comics from Portrait of Ruin’s official Japanese site by our old favourite Shizumon. These comics were only available in Japanese, so I’ve translated them into English. Jonathan and Wind are amazing. Thanks to Castlevania Realm for archiving the original strips.

Non-canon Castlevania protagonists, low-res pixel style!

I don’t really take into account the official pronouncements about whether something is canon or not. Here’s some characters you won’t find in the official timeline, but they can hang out in my timeline any day.

Sonia Belmont, the original Belmont (until Leon came along): Castlevania Legends, stricken from the record by IGA for “ignoring Castlevania’s look”. I don’t agree, I chalk it up to anti-KCEN bias.

Angela, the magical dancer and another of Trevor’s allies: Akumajo Dracula Pachislot 1 & 2, a set of gambling games set around the time of Curse of Darkness (Trevor Mode). Who says something exclusive to Japanese casinos can’t be canon?

Desmond Belmont, one of a trio of Belmont siblings in the 1600s: Castevania: Order of Shadows. Despite the developers working closely with IGA to ensure continuity, he declared it as being in a separate world. Why can’t a shoddy game for mobile phones only released in America count?

Carrie Fernandez, a young orphaned mage of the Belnades bloodline: Castlevania 64 and Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness. This time it’s anti-KCEK bias, although IGA claims that they intended these to be out of continuity. As far as I’m concerned she fits perfectly (although I had to pick a design, went with the later one).

Victor Belmont, the reluctant Belmont: Castlevania: Resurrection was a cancelled Dreamcast 3D instalment that involved time travel and probably Victor getting schooled by Sonia on responsibility. Sign me up.

Lady Gunner, the nameless sharpshooter: Akumajo Dracula: The Arcade is a light gun game that’s light on story elements anyway, so leaving it out is easy. But taking it in is more fun!

Kokoro Belmont, the modern Belmont: Otomedius Excellent is a scrolling shooter released and set in 2011, with characters referencing Konami franchises. Kokoro is a teenager, possibly Julius’s daughter, and has to shoot her way through an army of invading aliens. Obviously not core to the Castlevania series, but hey she’s a Belmont.

Kid Dracula, the cheeky mini-vampire displaced in time: Boku Dracula-kun and Kid Dracula are silly spin-offs with dubious continuity but have been featured in at least one official timeline. I like to think it’s Alucard when he was young and on board with the evil and ruling the world thing. I guess he forced Galamoth to send him back 10,000 years afterwards? That works.

[Comic] Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin official 4koma, unofficial scanlation, Part 1

Like Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin had on its official Japanese website a selection of gag comics; some by the regular artist Shizumon but also others (along with some other illustrations that are worth checking out). The strips have been archived here, but none of them were available in English, so I’ve translated them. These are the non-Shizumon comics, as well as two bonus mini-comics. The artist for the first comic, and the artist of the middle four and the bonuses are unknown, but “Charlotte” was labelled with “Poncho”, for what it’s worth.

The Medusa comic relied on a Japanese pun; the word “ishi” can be interpreted as “stone” or “doctor”. Thanks to my wife for coming up with an equivalent joke in English. Hopefully the rest of the jokes are clear!

[Review] Castlevania Legends (GB)

image

As I said in my Judgment review, I react negatively to someone ostensibly in charge of a series being exclusive for dumb reasons; it just made me want to play Legends more. Having a female Belmont as protagonist and being the last of three Game Boy games and so presumably more polished also attracted me (although yeah, it’s in the same engine but it was actually made by a different team).

So in this game that is totally in canon and fits in the series perfectly no matter what people might say, you play as Sonia Belmont, who kicks ass before any Belmont men ever did (except Leon 400 years before, but he’s a wuss). She has a relationship with Alucard as well, who as we all know is pretty much the coolest dude to ever wear a cape and a moody expression. SPOILERS! He’s also the father of her child Trevor, at least I think so.

Unlike the first two GB Castlevanias, this wasn’t rereleased for GBC in Europe. But that just makes it more of an underdog! Of course, in these situations you have to examine all the options. To play in GBC mode or Super Game Boy mode? In this case, GBC mode has less garish colours and more distinction between sprites and background, which always helps. The SGB border is cool but who needs that taking up screen space?

So now the gameplay. This is my first “traditional” Castlevania game, the linear type with stages. I know this may not be the best example but it didn’t win me away from the RPG/exploration of the Metroidvania style. And it didn’t even have the infamous Castlevania stairs, about which I’ve heard more horror stories than about Dracula himself. There are some branches, leading either  to dead ends or special items (which unlock the good ending). However the timer (why oh why did there have to be a timer) discourages dilly-dallying.

The graphics are mostly nice pixelly goodness—those tiny faceless heads are adorable—but then you get things like the awkward zombie seen above from time to time. The music is pleasantly chippy as well. It’s too bad the game suffers from stiff play control and slightly off hit detection.

From what I read, Legends seems to be slightly easier than its predecessors. There are concessions like the “Burning Mode” which give you brief invincibility, but only once per level; and sub-weapons are very powerful, but you do lose all hearts on death. But the game did well in transporting me into that retro mindset (didn’t prevent me from abusing savestates to get through though… I’m a bad, bad boy). Short, sweet, old-school goodness.

Great video game comic news everyone! The Metroid Database has finally finished their scanlation of the complete Samus & Joey series, which they’ve been releasing periodically for some time now. There are 4 whole volumes of completely new and original action-packed stories in the Metroid universe, with Samus and some new friends and foes (the 4th volume is called Metroid Extreme; it’s a continuation of S&J that wasn’t released in tankobon format). Check out their news post with links to the latest volume and the start. While you’re there you can even read the Metroid Prime 2 adaptation Episode of Aether in English, or any other Metroid comic going right back to Captain N. These folks are doing great work.

[Comic] Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow official 4koma, unofficial scanlation, Part 2

Rounding out my translations of the 4koma posted on Dawn of Sorrow’s Japanese website, here’s Shizumon’s comics. Don’t miss Part 1. Again, knowledge of the game is required for some but sometimes it’s that Julius is just weird, or kind of a perv. (EDIT: As Greenhat97 points out in their tags, he’s not a perv, he just enjoyed having his back stomped, as established in “Julius Mode 2”. My bad.) Once again thanks to Castlevania Realm for archiving the raw comics.

[Review] Castlevania Judgment (Wii)

image

I feel ill-equipped to judge this game. Although I’ve done the research, I’ve only played a handful of Castlevania games; nevertheless, it seems appropriately fanservice-y for a crossover between different eras of Castlevania. On the other hand, I’m also terrible at fighting games and generally dislike them. So I can’t speak too much to this one but it does seem insufficiently balanced; I managed it after turning the difficulty down but that speaks more to my own ability.

So it’s a fighting game, but I liked that it’s less restrictive than others I’ve played. You can roam around the stages freely, and there are stage hazards and items to pick up. There’s not too many buttons used but they have to work hard to cover all the moves, and trying to pull off the maneuver you want can sometimes be tricky. There’s charging and directional inputs change them, and sometimes your character will attack a candlestick instead of your opponent. I found it was also easy to get interrupted. Each character is different too, and requires practice to see what they’re about. My favourite was Shanoa for her mix of ranged and close attacks.

Having said that, I’ve stopped playing far from the end point. I’ve cleared Story Mode with everyone, true Story with Aeon, and the challenge room-based Castle mode with one character. After that I’m confident that the game is not 100% for me, and I’m not willing to put in the hours for the “content grind”. It just wasn’t that fun for me. The best part was seeing how they’ve depicted this range of characters, seeing their moves and their little lines. But the novelty wears off quickly.

Of course, the depictions have gone through a process of reinterpretation. Each character has been redesigned by Obata, the illustrator of Death Note. I enjoyed Death Note and it’s interesting to see that design philosophy applied to a series that already had its own visual identity. Of course you do then get some glaring issues, even getting past the concept of “What that’s not what my favourite character looks like!”. I’m talking about the sexualisation; it’s bad enough to give massive knockers to Sypha, but to focus the character arc of the little girl character around a fixation on other women’s bodies is just creepy. Japan strikes again!

Well I’m sure you could read insights like this anywhere on the Internet so I’ll wrap it up. It’s cool to have this mashup of characters of the series, even some which IGA has declared non-canon (Cornell from the second 64 game). (Which by the way, I freely disregard; I like to be inclusive in my canon.) It just falls a bit short on the execution. The plot calling back to Kid Dracula/Boku Dracula-kun of all things is funny, but it takes itself really seriously within the game; there’s not much of a sense of fun except for the odd brief glimpse when Grant is on-screen. So a missed opportunity in some ways, but a work with some effort put into it.

[Comic] Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow official 4koma, unofficial scanlation, Part 1

Here we have the non-Shizumon 4koma that were released on the official Japanese site for Dawn of Sorrow. I’ve translated the four (plus two bonus single panels) that were not done by the regular artist; unfortunately the artist of these is unknown. Some of these were tricky to puzzle out but in the end turned into some good gags! Although knowledge of the game is definitely required.

[Comic] Castlevania: Lament of Innocence official 4koma, unofficial scanlation

Once again we have some quick gag comics from the Japanese official game website, that I’ve translated into English. This time in addition to Shizumon, there’s some comics from another artist (that I don’t think are quite as funny). And again Castlevania Realm made it easier for me by collecting these and other comics.

[Comic] Castlevania Judgment official 4koma, unofficial scanlation

This set of comics was trickier than most to get raws for; the official website is entirely in Flash and the images can’t just be saved. So I got screenshots (which turned out a little better than the screenshots saved here, my usual source). Regardless, they’re still the familiar Shizumon 4koma, and they’ve so far only been available in Japanese. Until now! I’ve translated the text and sound effects to make them accessible to English speakers. Lots of fun gags in these ones!

This game a has a nice cast of characters, even if they look more like Death Note rejects than Castlevania characters. I don’t mind that though, it’s like a breath of fresh air, and the selection is pretty varied.

Simon Belmont, Trevor Belmont, Grant Danasty, Sypha Belnades, Maria Renard, Eric Lecarde, Shanoa, Alucard, Carmilla, Golem, Cornell, Death, Dracula, Aeon
