So there was a Monster Hunter-themed Animal Crossing clone on the PSP called Monster Hunter Diary Poka Poka Airu Village, which is now getting rereleased on the 3DS. There were a series of promotional shorts for the original called Monster Hunter Diary Giri Giri Airu Village. I heard there was a cameo by Chibiterasu, so I watched them all. It’s pretty funny. He appears in Episode 7, in the morning show-style framing device. Usually there’s a little monster sleeping there but in this episode it’s Chibi instead for some reason. And now there’s a picture of it on the Internet.

Golden Sun, low-detail pixel style!

I have a strong connection to these games. I’m not totally happy with all of these renditions, and I couldn’t always represent their short little capes, but some of them turned out great. Who was in your active party?

Isaac, Garet, Ivan, Mia, Felix, Jenna, Sheba, Piers
Matthew, Tyrell, Karis, Rief, Amiti, Sveta, Eoleo, Himi

Whew. I’ve just gone through and updated tags on all my old posts so you can consistently find categories. I’ve also made a brand new avatar image for myself, and updated my “About” page. Finally, I’ve given the “Projects” page for my blog a massive overhaul with more current stuff and links to the tags I mentioned. One of my aims is to be a good resource for various things and that means a better index page was required.

[Review] Lufia: Curse of the Sinistrals (DS)

image

Although the SNES has a reputation for being a haven for JRPGs, we didn’t actually own any on ours. Didn’t help that quite a few skipped our entire hemisphere: Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, Super Mario RPG, even Final Fantasy 4 and 6, all never released in PAL. Sure most of that is Square’s fault, looking at the list. My experience of console RPGs was Secret of Evermore, Mystic Quest, and Lufia 2 (none of which have universal random encounters—what a skewed view of the genre I must have had!); all borrowed from friends or played at their houses.

I caught up with a lot of them through emulation later on, and one I was especially pleased to revisit was Lufia 2. It’s got a few good hooks to it, such as finding capsule monsters, the action/puzzle elements, and the optional random dungeon. A lot of the rest was novel to me at the time but on retrospect has been done. Still, the connection was there and the gameplay and story held up for me.

This game is a remake, or rather a reboot of Lufia 2, which is a prequel to Lufia… confusing. It changes the gameplay to action RPG, removes the world map, and streamlines the whole plot, drastically shortening it (no bad thing in my view: it moves along well and hits the important notes). The capsule monsters are gone unfortunately, but a new system is the mystic stone board which lets you power up characters by placing gems on a grid with bonuses and such on it. The customisability was nice and collecting and upgrading gems feels good, but I miss those little friends. Still, they wouldn’t have fit with the gameplay as they reimagined it.

Although the characters have also been redone, they’re all there in the same roles, but tweaked for the better. The writing is really entertaining and the secondary characters are memorable. More importantly, I felt a good connection to the main players, helped by the voice acting which although sparse was well done. I love all those goofs and in fact they inspired me to get into pixel art; scroll back in my blog to see some examples.

The streamlining of the plot helps give it more impact; the story of a pantheon of gods turning against the people of the earth and having a flipped evil nature is scary and effective. Gades serves as the main villain for the first half of the game, there’s a climax, and a lengthy epilogue-type series of scenes, before the characters find out that there are more Sinistrals to deal with. It’s a unique structure and although I knew about the late plot twist, it’s still emotional and the New Game Plus also hinges on it thanks to a nice post-credits scene. The second playthrough contains a few small additional lines sprinkled through the game in addition to an expanded Ancient Cave (the random dungeon I mentioned earlier).

The Ancient Cave is essentially the end-game content, but it’s a bit tedious and when you play for four hours only to fail at floor 99 of 100, it can feel very unfair. But I took up the challenge and I’m happy to say beat it the second time. The combat system is robust enough to sustain essentially four straight hours of dungeon crawling, or I thought so at least. Unfortunately due its nature it doesn’t contain the puzzley bits of the normal dungeons, which were a highlight.

I feel very positive about this game, it’s a real labour of love. The original game’s team got together again to do it, this time under Square Enix. They managed to redo the most popular game in the series very well, albeit with lots of changes, big and small. It’s inspired me to follow up with the series and play the other games; chronologically, of course. I also have opened a new comics project with the 32-page Lufia 2 special from Germany’s official Nintendo magazine, Club Nintendo. Look out for that later. After all, translating comics is the other thing I’m the best in the world at (psst, it’s a quote from Dekar in this game).

Red Dwarf Crew, Xtended; low-detail pixel style!

Some people write fanfiction. I make spreadsheets and pixel art. This picture represents a hypothetical: what if all the friendly (and friendly-ish) people that the Dwarfers met through their adventures didn’t just last one episode, but stuck around and joined the crew? What would the crew look like if one way or another they banded together instead of leaving or dying off?

This will be a long post. See if you can name all the characters before reading (or if you don’t want to read) the whole thing. I’ve reached to the novels and comics for some characters but generally avoided duplicates (with the exception of Ace, because it’s Ace, and Holly because they’ve been shown to be capable of maintaining multiple personalities/appearances in Queeg and also the interactive DVD game Red Dwarf: Beat the Geek (see, this is related to video games!! Really!!)). Including all the Series VIII resurrected crew would be unwieldy and frankly breaks what I feel is important to the show: the tone of a bunch of misfits, but I included a few of the series’s more important characters. Finally, I have the two waxdroids who’ve had more than one appearance but it’s possible more could be there; again, showing more would make the image unwieldy.

Original Red Dwarf crew humans:

Lister!

What if Kochanski (alternate universe) stuck around after Series VIII?

What if Petersen used a spare stasis booth (as suggested in a virtual reality in the Better Than Life novel), or didn’t leave at the end of Series VIII (going by the alternate ending as the operating explanation for the status quo as of Back to Earth)?

What if Captain Hollister stuck around (dependent on him gaining his position by blackmail becoming common knowledge resulting in demotion; I don’t like having one person explicitly in charge, it breaks the tone)?

What if Kill Crazy, Baxter, and Warden Ackerman stuck around?

Other humans:

What if Lister’s twin sons Jim and Bexley (who were born between Series II and III) were not returned to the parallel universe and their ageing condition was cured, and Bexley did not die in the drive room as seen in a future echo?

What if Ace Rimmer didn’t leave in the Wildfire at the end of Dimension Jump?

What if JFK wasn’t erased by the temporal paradox caused by him killing himself in Tikka to Ride and had to accompany the Dwarfers back to preserve history?

What if Ainsley Harriott couldn’t return to the 20th century after Can’t Smeg Won’t Smeg (yes it’s totally canon)?

What if Jesus of Caesarea didn’t return to the 1st century in Lemons?

What if Irene Edgington didn’t stupidly fall out of an airlock at the end of Entangled?

What if Rimmer’s son Michael McGruder from the novel Last Human found the crew and joined them (which does happen in the book, and could conceivably happen in the show’s future)?

Holograms:

Rimmer!

What if Nirvanah Crane chose to go with Red Dwarf to be with Rimmer (the novel Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers suggest that using another ship’s hologram suite, in that case the Nova 5′s, would allow multiple holograms to coexist on the Dwarf)?

What if Howard Rimmer didn’t die at the end of Trojan and used the hologram suite of the Trojan (stored in the Dwarf’s hold as per the original concept for Series X) or the Columbus 3 to remain on Red Dwarf?

Droids:

Kryten!

Petersen’s Marilyn Monroe kit droid is presumably still on the ship after The Last Day, having last been seen crashing through the wall of the Officer’s Club.

What if the Elvis Presley waxdroid survived the battle at Waxworld? He stands in for other waxdroids who might have also survived, as the most prominent in Meltdown.

What if the Santa Claus waxdroid also survived Meltdown? He’s not seen to die in the episode and in fact in the mobisode Red Christmas another Santa turns up; it’s possible it’s the same one.

What if Legion was able to leave Legion Station and accompanied the crew after Legion? Hopefully he’d be more stable with more crew members around as shown here.

What if Able survived the fight on the Centauri in Beyond a Joke?

What if Hogey the Roguey’s seemingly good-natured rivalry with the crew cooled to a working relationship and he joined the crew after The Beginning?

Evolved animals:

The Cat!

What if the old cat priest survived his heart attack in Waiting for God?

What if the Dog from Parallel Universe left his matriarchal universe to be in one with less institutional discrimination against males?

What if the evolved pig from the Smegazine comic Evolution didn’t put herself in stasis? She may have been more amenable with more potential shipmates around, after all.

What if Ora/Aura from the unfinished Series VII episode Identity Within wasn’t dropped off on a planetoid after a 20-minute relationship with the Cat and instead joined the crew?

GELFs:

What if Camille and Hector stuck around after Camille?

What if Lister and his GELF bride Khakhakhakkhakhakkkhakkkkkh had agreed to be just friends instead of marrying, and she had joined the crew in Emohawk: Polymorph II?

What if Reketrebn the symbi-morph had helped Lister escape wrongful imprisonment in the GELF prison Cyberia and joined the crew (which in fact does happen in the novel Last Human and could conceivably happen in the show’s future)?

Computers:

What if Holly had not been put out of commission by water damage before Back to Earth and could maintain his male and female personalities, in addition to Queeg?

What if Cassandra had not been accidentally killed by Lister in Cassandra and was subsequently salvaged?

The Medi-Bot is now a standard part of Red Dwarf’s Medibay as of Series X.

What if Pree did not try to kill the crew, forcing her shutdown? Maybe the other computers could help keep her under control.

Mechanicals/other:

Skutters! Vending machines!

Lister’s pet mechanical goldfish, Lennon and McCartney!

Talkie Toaster!

Spare Head 3! He’s the only spare head with a unique personality. He wasn’t necessarily destroyed by the negadrive in Beyond a Joke.

And that’s it! A much more lively and diverse lineup than what’s in the show. Of course, it would be hopelessly impractical for scriptwriting and making a good show, but it’s a fun thought experiment. Can you think of any more characters you’d add? What would life on Red Dwarf actually look like in this situation? Pretty chaotic, I bet. But it mostly maintains the Red Dwarf feel, of a bunch of outcasts struggling through space.

My experience of the Splatoon Global Testfire: 45 min of loading screens and disconnections, and three games getting splatted by paint rollers. Yeah, no thanks. I’m not exactly convinced.

EDIT: Apparently my connection problems were down to a server issue which did get sorted out. Still, bad first impression, no? Besides I’m not sure the core of the gameplay is my thing.

Did you know that there might possibly have been a Red Dwarf game at some point? A British game company pitched the idea to GNP at one point but it didn’t get picked up. With that tenuous link to video games, I can post this cool picture I made! This is kind of the “best case scenario” crew (ignoring script writing concerns), which has never actually happened. The closest we got was Series VIII, and the less said about that the better. Better is the novel Last Human, but there’s no Holly there. Anyways.

Paper Mario, low-detail pixel style!

I told you I’d be back. I wanted to try doing even smaller characters in this style. So here’s all the main playable characters from the Paper Mario games that actually have characters (ie. not Sticker Star). I tried to add Twink but couldn’t get him right.

Paper Mario: Mario, Goombario, Kooper, Bombette, Parakarry, Bow, Watt, Sushie, Lakilester

The Thousand Year Door: Mario, Goombella, Koops, Flurrie, Yoshi Kid, Vivian, Bobbery, Ms. Mowz

Super Paper Mario: Mario, Peach, Bowser, Luigi.

In case you have trouble recognising the characters, they are from left to right: Maxim, Tia, Lexis, Iris, Guy, Dekar, Artea.

By the way, I made these to be the credits page art for my next comics project. Maybe a bit pre-emptive because I’m not really ready to start translating it yet!
