[Review] Overcooked (PS4)

I played this with my little brother over a period of weeks. Co-op is really the best way to play this frantic task management game, and the inventive level design and objective requirements keep you on your toes constantly. It can get stressful but the satisfaction of a job well done is worth it.

This is one of those games that is always coming up with new ways to make clearing a level awkward, but it rarely becomes rage-inducing. You just need to try again and concentrate more, or work together better… or take a break of course. Your actions are simple: chop, cook, wash plates, assemble a meal then send it out. But juggling the many steps one at a time with the pressures of the timers very quickly escalates the tension.

The key is to remain calm, be efficient, and communicate clearly with your partner(s). Of course, keeping those plates spinning is a tall order, and things can get heated when one comes crashing down. This is the beauty of Overcooked.

The game’s aesthetics are pretty simple, the assets feeling a bit Unity-stock, and the music upbeat but repetitive. Character design is pleasingly lumpy, with a diverse set of chefs to unlock as you progress around the dinky world map. Levels also take place in a range of environments from brick restaurants to icebergs and outer space, with accompanying gimmicks to add a wrinkle each time (often amounting to dynamic reconfiguring of the playing area to throw you off). The important thing is that the interactable objects are always clear, and the aesthetics rarely get in the way of you getting things done.

Anyway, it’s just a well-made little co-op game. Manageable mayhem.
