Breath of the Wild’s converging timeline plus village living in the big dumb Zelda timeline, part 9.

I was prompted by a reader to address the new official timeline updates; thanks @mushroomfusion245! First of all, Link’s Awakening apparently has been shifted to before the Oracle games. I don’t know why they felt the need to make this change but I don’t particularly feel the need to reflect it here. For one thing, the boat in the OoX linked game’s ending is clearly the same boat Link is sailing in the LA intro. For another thing, moving it would be too much work for me.

They also asked about the Breath of the Wild costumes in Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition. To me they’re just that, costumes. They don’t say anything to me about the incarnations of those characters appearing any more than Zelda’s dress in Fatal Frame or King dressing as Ganondorf in Tekken. Sorry!

On to the good news: Breath of the Wild has an official place on my unofficial timeline! According to Nintendo, it merges all three branches of the timeline… somehow. It makes some sense if you consider the dimensional shenanigans going on in Hyrule Warriors, and to make this fit better I’ve moved the latter to the end of the Child branch. This makes Hyrule Warriors a glorious end to that branch (that we know of so far), to contrast with the Decline branch’s ignominious end of the Captain N cartoon, and the neutral end of Spirit Tracks. Now BotW ends everything (for now).

But there’s more to this update! Monster Hunter Stories, the 2016 3DS game, featured Epona as a guest character. She has an appearance closer to the younger version from Ocarina of Time, and you hatch her from an egg in the game… somehow. During a special attack Navi also pops up, which makes more sense coming from the Child era.

The final addition is the guest villagers in Animal Crossing New Leaf’s amiibo update. Using Zelda series amiibo you can get cute versions of Medli (Wind Waker), pig Ganon (using a design closest to official OoX art), Epona (OoT version, based on appearance and the amiibo used to call her), and Wolf Link (Twilight Princess). Their personalities very much fit Animal Crossing moulds, but there’s nothing to suggest they aren’t the characters they’re named for… somehow. Well, it’s fun, anyway.

On top of this, I’ve replaced some images, shifted things around to make room (Portal of Doom seemed like a post-OoT story so I moved it nearer Majora’s Mask, and the Starbeans cameo fits Minish Cap just as well). Breath of the Wild also has links to Twilight Princess specifically by the Wolf Link amiibo and the ability to summon Epona (whose appearance is ambiguous but I leaned towards it looking like the TP incarnation, plus the TP Link amiibo is used to summon her), so it gets a new logo for its collection.

Well, that was fun, I missed this! Thanks for reading and check the tag for past and future revisions! I guess Smash Ultimate will prompt the next one.
