I love this game too much to say much about it. I first played it back when my friend brought a copy back from a trip to Japan, and together we tried to master its story and mechanics. I chose it for game club this month, and feel personally accomplished to have completed it fully now.
I still regard the Zero series as a high water mark for snappy play control and wonderfully detailed pixel art supported by rad as heck character design. The music’s great too, and the plot is just convoluted enough to be great fun. At the time I was introduced to it (what heady days! The Phantom Menace! Pizza parlours! The Hamsterdance!) I had no idea what Mega Man was, and Rockman Zero is the only reason I care about the franchise at all, which makes me an outlier in the fandom.
Inti Creates really created a special moment, with an alchemy of customisation, tough as nails difficulty, an anime-inspired aesthetic, attention to detail (every enemy has a special death sprite for being cut in half with your sword), all mixed up with a high level of polish… except for the English language localised script, which is stiff and awkward. But that’s hardly Inti’s fault.
Zero is just too cooooool you guys. That’s all I really wanted to say. I shouldn’t write these things when I’m tired.
