I’m finally getting around to playing the other Shantae games before Seven Sirens comes out. But first, a revisit to this short and sweet game in Director’s Cut form.
I already played Risky’s Revenge, on iOS in 2012. But I’m highly embarrassed by my old review… so here’s another shot at it. Shantae Risky’s Revenge is a lovely little sidescrolling adventure, less ambitious in scope than its predecessor or successors. In structure it’s not unlike Wonder Boy/Monster World: The Dragon’s Trap, but with a bit of plane-hopping action in the overworld, which I believe is unique to this game. It also displays all of WayForward’s typical features with lush pixel art, smooth animation, and bouncy female characters.
Compared to the original GBC game, it’s very streamlined; for example, the complicated dance sequences have been greatly simplified, and the world map is more straightforward. The Director’s Cut helps navigation even more by changing the (Donkey Kong 64-like) twinned warp points to be universally selectable (more like Banjo-Tooie). It’s also just a small game, with two dungeons, one town, a handful of bosses, etc. But that’s fine; it’s aiming to be small and digestable and succeeds admirably… not fighting the Ammo Baron does imply “some content had to be cut”, though.
The only other changes with this “updated” release are some display options and a hard-mode costume (which was already available—and more easily accessible—in the iOS version). But expanding the release platforms is a good thing, particularly with how the sequel builds on the story developments (continuity! love it!). And so, on to Pirate’s Curse!
