[Review] Guacamelee (PS4)

Years ago I played through this game with my brother over a Christmas holiday. Now, we’ve played it again, but this time we both had controllers and it was the Super Turbo Championship edition, and it’s still great!

So Guacamelee is a sidescrolling brawler/platform-adventure (genres are hard) steeped in Mexican culture. It’s worth considering for yourself what that means to you, maybe doing a bit of research (I recommend this article by the game’s concept lead, and this), but as far as I’m concerned it’s a fun, rich setting and more than a surface coat of paint, informing everything from the memorable cast of characters to the top-notch presentation.

It’s also tremendous fun to play. Moving around the world and fighting enemies both are smooth and constantly enjoyable, especially as your range of abilities expands (there’s a double jump!). It’s even better in co-op; striving together, collaborating, sometimes competing or trolling. There’s secrets to find everywhere and costumes/alternate playable characters (as DLC) to customise your experience.

This enhanced rerelease makes some helpful quality-of-life changes, as well as seamlessly adding in a couple of extra areas, a new boss fight, and even a new core mechanic or two. After such a long time it was an excellent way to add extra freshness to our replay, and I don’t at all regret 100%-ing it for the second time.
