In a pause between Shantae: Risky’s Revenge and Half-Genie Hero, I played this instalment of WayForward’s loose “Mighty” series of puzzle-platformers. It’s brief but good.
As I said in the Risky’s Revenge review, Mighty Switch Force employs many typically WayForward—and Matt Bozon—traits: smoothly-controlling action gameplay, strong art direction, and cute women. The protagonist this time is future cop Patricia Wagon (it’s a clever pun, you see) who in each level has to bust five adorable escaped criminals. Her main tool is the ability to “switch” or flip the states of blocks in the world, from inactive to active.
There’s 16 levels, selected from a menu with minimal story fuss. The focus is on solving the challenges, and optionally doing it quickly to beat time records. The challenge ramps up over the course of the game, to the point that—with retries—the final gauntlet took me almost as much time as the rest of the game combined! Thankfully they give you a checkpoint at the final boss. But then! There’s a set of six fun bonus levels (I think they were originally DLC). And then! For the Hyper Drive rerelease, every level has been remixed to be harder. I decided that I’d had enough trouble with the latter stages in normal mode and put it down at that point. It’s tough but enjoyable puzzle-action, what else is there to say!
