[Review] Mighty Switch Force: Hose it Down! (iOS)

This spinoff removes the platforming component, delivering an enjoyable block-shifting puzzler suited to the platform.

Hose it Down continues the firefighting theme that MSF2 brought to the table, also reusing graphics and certain mechanics (like the women to be rescued). Patricia Wagon exists only as an entry point for a stream of water; most of your contol is in moving blocks around to create pipe paths. Once all fires are out and civilians freed (by making an open path out the right side) you win.

I’ve played other block-based puzzle games but the “hose” aspect is a nice distinctifier (which is a word I just made up). Actually I’ve played games about connecting pipe mazes too, but here you’re only making a configuration long enough to put out a certain fire, then shifting things around to adjust to the next one (and extinguished fires free up a space on the board for manoeuvring). These mechanics are clever and they get some good mileage out of them over the game’s short lifespan.

There’s 25 puzzles in all, with the option to get 25 more for a modest in-app fee (the app itself is now free with ads, which are also removed on purchase). On top of that there’s a whole lot of unique daily puzzles that cycle out; I wish they were just available to play, but oh well.

Really I’m just glad the game is still playable, despite not having been updated in four years. Many games just drop out of the App Store over time. I should note I have a recent phone, but it actually heated up significantly while playing… but hey, that matches the fire theming!
