Here’s another quick Konjak game; it’s a complete game too!
Chalk is kind of a shmup, kind of a puzzle-action game? The setup is shmup-like: the screen scrolls along, while enemies and objects emerge to be avoided or destroyed. The control scheme is the selling point: while moving with WASD or right-click, you left-click to draw lines. Some obstacles you must draw across their vertices, a line can reflect some bullets or damage enemies by drawing to them from their bullet, while other projectiles can be directly interacted with by clicking, etc. Each level has some new creative use of the pointer controls or a way of presenting a combination of challenges that keeps the experience fresh over its short runtime.
The game’s aesthetics tie in to the line-drawing concept, as everything appears as chalk drawings on a blackboard. Enemies range from abstract shapes to silly cartoonish characters to little spaceships, but the art style still makes it feel cohesive. The player character is also very cute!
As Chalk progresses, the challenge level climbs, and at times things can feel overwhelming as different kinds of interactable objects enter from all over the screen. But with careful positioning you can get by with minimal interaction required, and before too long I’d beaten the final boss! It’s certainly a game that experiments thoroughly with its core concept of pointing and drawing, then wraps it up before becoming tedious.
