[Review] Pic-a-Pix Colour (3DS)

image

I’ve been running short of Jupiter Picross games to play on 3DS (the absolute best place to play these type of logic puzzle games), so I’ve turned to third parties for a fix. Pic-a-Pix is a perfectly cromulent game with good controls, even if the pictures turn out a bit ugly.

[Review] The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes (3DS)

image

There’s highs and lows to the experience of Tri Force Heroes. The premise seems pretty player-unfriendly, but by connecting with an active online community I was able to wring some enjoyment from it.

[Review] Xeodrifter (3DS)

image

Xeodrifter builds on Renegade Kid’s Mutant Mudds to create a gritty, streamlined, miniature Metroid-like adventure. And it does so very well.

[Review] Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros. (3DS)

image

Let’s make this quick so I don’t get too mad. Paper Jam Bros. has all the wit and engaging battle mechanics of previous Mario & Luigi games, but it has had the soul sucked out of it. It squanders the potential of a Paper crossover and exemplifies the blandness of what the Mario series has become.

[Review] Retro City Rampage DX (3DS)

image

After playing a GTA game and Bro Force recently, I decided it was natural to pick up this next (I like making connections, ok?). Its scattershot approach kept me on the back foot most of the time, but it’s a satisfying little game.

[Review] Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion (3DS)

image

The original Epic Mickey was a bit underwhelming to me, but the concept behind this 3DS sidescroller is it’s a dual sequel, following up on both Epic Mickey and the old Sega Illusion platformers. This double lineage and a broad acknowledgment of the animated canon doesn’t guarantee a flawless experience, though.

[Review] Sanrio Characters Picross (3DS)

What do you know, another Picross game. I’m always up for those.

[Review] Blaster Master Zero (3DS)

image

My playthrough of Inti’s Mega Man successors led into this, since it was also released recently and features Gunvolt as a guest character (although I didn’t use him). Lacking in experience with the series though I am, it seems a successful reboot of what was good about the original game.

[Review] Mighty Gunvolt Burst (3DS)

image

The followup to Inti’s crossover Mighty Gunvolt expands on its predecessor in all the best ways, with more features, more complexity, and a style wonderfully beyond 8-bit.

[Review] Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 (3DS)

image

I enjoyed the gameplay of Gunvolt 1 but struggled to engage with the characters and story. That goes double for the sequel, which is a very direct continuation.

[Review] Mighty Gunvolt (3DS)

image

I’m not normally one for 8-bit nostalgia, but since this was a freebie from backing Mighty No. 9 I checked it out. Besides, it was fun to see concepts and bosses from MN9 and Gunvolt demade into a simpler format.

[Review] Azure Striker Gunvolt (3DS)

image

Inti’s specialty is Mega Man-type games. While working on Mighty No. 9, they also put out this, a new IP with gameplay that could be considered a successor to their Zero and ZX games. It’s no replacement for me, but has some fun new core mechanics.

[Review] Picross e8 (3DS)

image

I sure do love me some Picross! Luckily for me Jupiter continues to provide. However, there’s essentially nothing new in this version but for a new collection of puzzles to solve. Fine with me… in fact, just refer to my e7 review as the exact same collection of words applies perfectly to this instalment. Bool! The end.

[Review] Sonic Generations (PS3/3DS)

image

After falling for Sonic Rush I intended to pursue its lineage through Rush Adventure and Colours DS, before finishing at Generations 3DS as the final evolution of the formula under Dimps. I had to move the schedule up though, for the Streetpass opportunities that my trip to Japan afforded me. Consequently I played through the 3DS version while over there, then followed it with the console version when I got back.

[Review] Rhythm Paradise Megamix (3DS)

image

I reviewed the last Rhythm Heaven game here, and much of what I wrote remains true. The games are well put together with a great sense of joy underlying the art and sound direction. It’s not just functional, although it is that too; the audio and visuals being clear and harmonious is important for a rhythm game, but having it be silly and fun and catchy is also important to make you smile and remember it.
