The original Diddy Kong Racing was one of my early pixel art posts. Non-human forms are still difficult for me to draw, but I’ve gone back and updated all these lovely little critters, then added the new racers from the DS remake. I’m much happier with this piece now!

Chrono Trigger was one of the first things I ever pixelled. I’m finally getting around to checking out some other games in the series, so here’s the main trio from this Super Famicom visual novel that’s a sort of prototype for Chrono Cross. Serge sure does have a dumb-looking outfit!

Another Eden, low-res pixel style! (2 images)

This mobile RPG is not-so-secretly a sequel to Chrono Trigger, and has an even more complicated time travel story by the same writer, Masato Kato. It’s got characters out the wazoo, way more than Chrono Cross. Many of the female cast have questionable character designs, but you get a lot of freedom to pick your team. Here I’ve drawn two parties: one with the main story characters and the other is who I chose for the majority of my playtime.

1: Aldo, Feinne, Amy, Riica, Cyrus, Helena

2: Parisa, Raven, Krervo, Lokido, Cyuca, Foran

Roll-chan vs the female Robot Masters, low-res pixel style! (3 images)

This is kind of a thought experiment or very loose idea for an all-female Mega Man/Rockman game. It occurred to me that there were barely enough woman Robot Masters in the Classic era franchise to make a full boss set of 8, and naturally Roll would be the one to take them on with her Roll Buster (as seen in Rockman 1 mobile and the Marvel vs Capcom games), her trusty broom (from Powered Up and Tatsunoko vs Capcom), and her ability to turn her arm into household appliances to be used as weapons (in the Ruby-Spears cartoon). The latter would be her version of the Copy Ability, with each boss giving her a themed appliance/weapon like a souped-up whirlpool blender or rocket stove. Pretty cool, eh?

Shoutouts to Capricorn’s two Rockmen R fangames that star Roll, as well as Zynk Oxhyde’s romhacks that replace Rock with her in all the 8-bit games! More details on the characters chosen below.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, low-res pixel style!

Douglas Adams’ wonderful stories have entertained me for many years. I’ve been reading the DC comic series from the 90s, it’s a good adaptation! But then there are so many adaptations, aren’t there? Radio to books to TV to the film. Here is the main cast of characters ie. the Heart of Gold gang plus Slartibartfast, from the three versions of the story in visual media. Then, a bonus fourth picture for other “main characters” that are only in non-visual stories.

1. From the 80s BBC TV series: Arthur Dent, Ford Prefect, Zaphod Beeblebrox, Trillian, Marvin, Slartibartfast.

2. The same, from the 90s DC comic series.

3. The same, from the 00s film.

4. Lintilla (a character exclusive to the latter half of the radio show’s second phase, which covers a story never adapted; I based the depiction on fanart by Nick Page), Fenchurch (from the fourth book and radio series; I based this on her brief cameo in the TV series), Random Dent (from the fifth book and radio series; I based this on official promo art for the sixth radio series by Trystan Mitchell).

Mystery Science Theater 3000 v2, low-res pixel style!

In the not too distant past I did a previous MST3K pixel art, but I’ve now updated it to add the newest iteration (plus tweaking some designs and adding Cambot and Erhardt)! I’m quite happy with the new seasons, and glad to add them here alongside the classics.

The Hosts: Joel Robinson, Mike Nelson, Jonah Heston

The Bots: Cambot, Gypsy, Tom Servo, Crow T. Robot, M. Waverley, Growler

The Mads: Clayton Forrester, Pearl Forrester, Kinga Forrester, Laurence Erhardt, TV’s Frank, Bobo, Brain Guy, Max, Synthia Forrester

I’ve just read this Marvel comic series from the 90s, and it’s pretty dang good! Expanding on TOS’s original pilot The Cage, it introduces a bunch of new characters to fill out the Pike and Number One staff, and some classic sci-fi adventures ensue. Note that the comic ignores the subtle colour distinction between command and operations jumpers, but I’ve tried to reflect how they appeared in the show’s two pilots.

Christopher Pike, E. Robbins, Spock, Phillip Boyce, Moves-With-Burning-Grace, Nano, Sita Mohindas, José Tyler, Mia Colt, Gabrielle Carlotti

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, low-res pixel style!

I’ve recently read two different comic spinoff series about the Academy. One is a gnarly 90s Marvel comic, giving Nog a supporting cast and some crazy adventures, sometimes tying in to Deep Space Nine. The other is a recent one from IDW set in the universe of the new movies, which continues in the Boldly Go series. Both have fun, diverse casts that I enjoyed drawing!

Omega Squad from the Marvel comic: Kamilah Goldstein, Matthew Decker, Nog, T’Priell/Selke, Pava Ek’Noor Aqabaa, Edam Astrun, Kyethn Zund

The crew from the IDW comic: T’Laan, Lucia Gonzales, Jaylah, Grace Chen, Shev Akria, Vel K’Bentayr

Doctor Who monsters and Masters, low-res pixel style!

To follow my “classic DW Doctors and companions” art, here’s a selection of the top 8 monsters/baddies, plus eight of the Master’s incarnations. Some of these were difficult to draw and didn’t turn out so well, but I love the Dalek!

Dalek, Cyberman, Sontaran, Silurian, Ice Warrior, Auton, Zygon, Weeping Angel

Delgado Master, Pratt/Beevers “Decayed” Master, Ainley “Tremas” Master, Roberts “Morphant” Master, Macqueen Master (from the Big Finish audios), Jacobi “War” Master, Simm “Saxon” Master, Gomez “Missy”

The Animal Buddies, or Animal Friends, are one of the coolest part of the DKC games. And DKC2 is the best game ever made I reckon, so here’s a bunch of my favourite gaming companions (including the GBA remake, which added an ostrich racing minigame). This picture was drawn as an entry to the DKVine “DKC2 Relay” community event, which I am participating in by streaming DKC2′s Gloomy Gulch this coming Friday at 1pm AEDT.

Rambi the Rhino, Rattly the Rattlesnake, Squitter the Spider, Squawks the Parrot, Expresso II the Ostrich, Squeaks/Flapper the Parrot, Enguarde the Swordfish, Glimmer the Angler Fish, Clapper the Seal

Classic Doctor Who, low-res pixel style!

Doctor Who is back and I couldn’t be happier. But let’s have a look back at the pre-2005 era. Here’s all the (official) Doctors over the years from 1963 to 2005, with the ever-present Tardis (it doesn’t change very much) and a selection of five companions. Some Doctors had too many, especially from the black-and-white era, so I had to leave some out sorry! Others had few, so they’ve been filled out with non-televised companions from novels, audio, or comics. Some Doctors share companions! These I’ve assigned to the Doctor they’re most strongly associated with.

First Doctor (William Hartnell): Susan, Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright, Vicki Pallister, Steven Taylor

Second Doctor (Patrick Troughton): Jamie McCrimmon, Ben Jackson, Polly Wright, Victoria Waterfield, Zoe Heriot

Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee): Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, Jo Grant, Liz Shaw, John Benton, Mike Yates

Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker): Sarah Jane Smith, Harry Sullivan, Leela, K-9, Romana

Fifth Doctor (Peter Davison): Tegan Jovanka, Adric, Nyssa, Vislor Turlough, (Kamelion disguised as?) Erimem

Sixth Doctor (Colin Baker): Peri Brown, Frobisher, Evelyn Smythe, Henry Gordon Jago, George Lightfoot

Seventh Doctor (Sylvester McCoy): Ace McShane, Mel Bush, Bernice Summerfield, Chris Cwej, Hex

Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann): Grace Holloway, Charley Pollard, Sam Jones, Fitz Kreiner, Izzy SInclair

Mighty Gunvolt, low-res pixel style!

I just played through both these potential Mega Man successors, Mighty No. 9 and Azure Striker Gunvolt, as well as their sequels and crossover titles. I had a lot of fun and wanted to commemorate the playable cast, some of whom have really cool designs. I love Ray a lot but her very complex look was difficult to pixellate!

Trouble again! This was a surprisingly fun and engaging show. Some good Star Wars stories and wacky shenanigans. I put 3PO and R2 in the middle, as they are often caught up in the middle of wild circumstances. On the left are masters and friends, with villains and foes on the right. Each row represents an arc of the show, or matched selections from a run of the comics.

Centre: C-3PO, R2-D2

First arc: Thall Joben, Kea Moll, Jord Dusat, Tig Fromm, Vlix Oncard, Sise Fromm

Second arc: Jann Tosh, Jessica Meade, Mon Julpa, Kleb Zellock, Ko Zatec-Cha, Kybo Ren

Legend of the Valkyrie, low-res pixel style!

I’ve been reading comics from the excellent Shiftylook project, which was unfortunately wiped from the face of the Internet. Fans have backed up most of the material though! One of my favourites was the Valkyrie comic, especially Leigh Davis ( @jailbirdcomic )’s run. Their writing and art was so wonderful! I loved the humorous action with this fun cast of characters.

Valkyrie, Sandra, Krino, Moonlight, Sabine
