Clone Wars Jedi, low-res pixel style!

After my art based on Star Wars: The Clone Wars, I felt there were many more Jedi I could have represented in the image. So why not do all of them? Here’s a selection of many of the most important named Jedi who were featured (with a visual representation) in Clone Wars-era stories. The first image is characters from the movies, the 2D or CG animated Clone Wars shows, and prominent video games. The second has Jedi from comics, books, tabletop RPGs, and more video games. The third is Jedi younglings or initiates.

Of course there’s some I had to skip, or that were more focused on Purge-era stories. But these images capture the diversity of races, costumes, and lightsaber colours that these characters of the Jedi Order have been depicted with.

1. Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano, Yoda, Mace Windu, Plo Koon, Kit Fisto, Aayla Secura, Shaak Ti, Luminara Unduli, Barriss Offee, Adi Gallia, Stass Allie, Saesee Tiin, Quinlan Vos, Ki-Adi-Mundi, Eeth Koth, Agen Kolar, Depa Billaba, Coleman Trebor, Jocasta Nu, Tera Sinube, Even Piell, Oppo Rancisis, Bolla Ropal, Ima Gun-Di, Nahdar Vebb, Tiplee, Tiplar, Rig Nema, Cin Drallig (movies/The Clone Wars show). Serra Keto (Revenge of the Sith game, console version). Roron Corobb, Foul Moudama, Voolviff Monn, K’Kruhk (Genndy Tartakovsky’s animated Clone Wars show). Ferroda (Battlefront: Elite Squadron). Mavra Zane (Kinect Star Wars, Jedi Destiny mode). Echuu Shen-Jon, Naat Reath (Galactic Battlegrounds: Clone Campaigns).

2. Keelyvine Reus, Tyzen Xebec, Sanya (TCW webcomics Act on Instinct and The Valsedian Operation). B’ink Utrila, Rennax Omani (TCW graphic novel Defenders of the Lost Temple). This cross-media initiative was one of the more high-profile Star Wars spinoffs. Set between Empire and Jedi, it tells a new story with all your favourite character plus some brand new ones. Here are the new characters introduced in the novel/comic/game/action figures/trading cards experience that is Shadows of the Empire.

Xizor, the reptilian head of criminal syndicate Black Sun. Guri, his gynoid aide (based on her comic outfit as opposed to the one in the card game art). Dash Rendar, the braggart merc with Rebel sympathies. Leebo, his wisecracking droid companion. Big Gizz and Spiker, leaders of Jabba’s gang of biker thugs. Jix, the bare-chested Imperial spy who infiltrates said thugs. Koth Melan, the Bothan spymaster.

To compare with my previous post, here’s some of the prominent female characters I found in the year and a bit of streaming I did before 2018. There’s a lot fewer when you’re not selecting for them! Such is the state of the medium on average. Still, I really attached to these ones. Not all of these ladies starred in their own game even but they stood out to me.

Tara & Kitnee (Ecco Jr.), Ariel (Ariel the Little Mermaid), Asha (Monster World IV), Jill (Jill of the Jungle), Phoenix Shadowalker (Shadowalker), Euri (Slap Happy Rhythm Busters), Marsa (Rakugakids), Classic Amy (Sonic Drift 1&2)

I’ve been enjoying streaming this year. If you’re not aware, I stream (with commentary) a semi-obscure retro game every week that’s new to me at https://www.twitch.tv/miloscatter. This year in particular I’ve been choosing games that star female characters, and along the way here’s some of the cool women and girls I’ve discovered in the first half of 2018.

Row 1: Bubsy, who is a trans woman in certain fan works (The Woolies Strike Back, Bubsy Fangames Showcase part 2); Giana (The Great Giana Sisters); Annet Myer (El Viento, Annet Futatabi); Patience Philips (Catwoman); D’arci Stern (Urban Chaos)

Row 2: Mail (Popful Mail); Jill (Drill Dozer); Miria (The Guardian Legend); Vikki Grimm (Portal Runner); Lina (Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic)

Row 3: Anne (Jurassic Park Trespasser); Princess No-Knees (Narbacular Drop); Dixie Kong (Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble); Alice (Balloon Kid); Kitty (Hello Kitty World)

Row 4: The Girl (Tobu Tobu Girl); Mara Jade (Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith); Rianna Saren (Star Wars: Lethal Alliance); Ellen Ripley (Alien 3); Marlee (Second Chances)

Row 5: Valkyrie (Valkyrie no Densetsu); Layla and Iris (Layla); Lucia (Wing of Madoola); Lammy (UmJammer Lammy)

I’ve been playing the Star Wars: The Force Awakens Beginner Game tabletop RPG with a small group. You start on Jakku some time before TFA and shenanigans inevitably ensue.

This is our party: Mhar’li the brash pilot and blastslinger, Durm Bormo the exiled patriarch and teller of tall tales (that’s me!), Wol Kessix the incompetent Space-French spy (an NPC who stuck around; we gave him the appearance of unused PC Tiras Or’un), and Sherry the cocktail-dispensing droid that the GM gave us after my constant requests for a robot sidekick.

Lego Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures, low-res pixel style!

Here’s another very fun Star Wars show, about a family of scavengers trying to get by in the time of the Empire. It’s got comedy, action, great characters, and plenty of Star Wars fanservice too. It’s also got my favourite depiction of the Emperor, which is largely carried over from this show’s predecessor The Yoda Chronicles, as is the character Jek-14. I’ve done separate pieces for heroes and villains here.

Rowan Freemaker, Kordi Freemaker, Zander Freemaker, R0-GR, Jek-14, Quarrie, Lieutenant Valeria

Naare, MOC, Durpin, Plumestriker, Graballa the Hutt, Dengar

Star Wars: The Clone Wars, low-res pixel style!

In lieu of portraying episodes 2 and 3 in pixels, here’s something I actually enjoy. The CG animated show told a lot of fun stories, but the ensemble cast is massive. I tried to cover all the most important people but there’s many more clones, Jedi, minor villains, and other characters that didn’t make the cut. I also put in a bonus row of characters from other audiovisual media of the Clone Wars era, such as video games and the in-some-ways-superior 2D animated Clone Wars show (if I included comics too it would get out of hand).

Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano, Rex, Padmé Amidala, R2-D2, Yoda, Mace Windu, Wullf Yularen, Fives, Jar Jar Binks, Satine Kryze, Hondo Ohnaka, Cad Bane, Boba Fett, Pre Viszla, Barriss Offee, Mother Talzin, Chancellor Palpatine, Count Dooku, General Grievous, Asajj Ventress, Savage Opress, Maul, Jango Fett (Attack of the Clones), Durge (Tartakovsky’s Clone Wars), Sai Sircu (Jedi Alliance), Kul Teska (Republic Heroes), X2 (Battlefront: Elite Squadron), Jek-14 (The Yoda Chronicles)

I like Phantom Menace the best out of the prequels, both because I think the story is closest to a fun Star Wars adventure, and also nostalgia factor due to my age. The cast too has that feel of a group thrown together by circumstance but banding together for a purpose. So here they are.

Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Jar Jar Binks, Padmé Amidala, R2-D2, Anakin Skywalker

The Fellowship of the Ring, low-res pixel style!

The heroes of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings books, love ‘em. This art is modelled after their representation in Peter Jackson’s film series; Fatty Bolger and Tom Bombadil aren’t in the films so I used as reference art the photos used in the Trading Card Game, which is the nearest “canonical” visual equivalent. I’ve always loved these books and movies, such a rich world to get lost in!

The first picture is the Fellowship as they were at their founding, setting out from Rivendell. Gandalf the Grey, “Strider” Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Boromir, Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin.

The second is them towards the end of their journey, as they’ve been changed by their trials. Gandalf the White, battle king Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli (best buds, now with elven cloaks!), tired Frodo and Sam, Rohan Merry, and Gondor Pippin.

The third picture is all the good folk who helped them and travelled with them for part of the way (so not counting Galadriel or Théoden, etc.). “Fatty” Bolger, Tom Bombadil, Arwen, Treebeard, Éomer, Éowyn, Sméagol, Faramir, Bill the pony, Shadowfax, Gwaihir.

Red Dwarf Crew, Xtended, Remastered; low-res pixel style!

I made a Red Dwarf pixel art a long time ago, but I’ve improved my pixeling skills since then, and the show has had two new series! So here’s the updated version of my fanficcy what-if scenario: what would it look like if every friendly-ish character that could have joined the crew did? I bent my own rules for some of these, for the purposes of fun, but in a show like this nothing is too implausible.

This was a lot of fun to draw, but half the fun is expanding on the characters and coming up with justifications for how they could have banded together. I’ll put that stuff beneath a Read More thing this time, but first a basic list of all the folks here.

OG Dwarfers: Lister, Kochanski, Petersen, Hollister, Kill Crazy, Baxter, Ackerman, Birdman

Contemporary humans: Jim, Bexley, Ace Rimmer, Michael McGruder, Irene Edgington, Rachel Barker, Jim Green, Tutt Johnson

Evolved animals: The Cat, the Cat Priest, the Dog, the Cat (USA), the Pig, Juma, Krazy, Ora
