The phenomenon of SiivaGunner’s “high quality video game rips”, which are really bait-and-switch audio jokes, memes, and excellent mashups, has made quite an impression on me. The edits are always skilfully done, or at least amusing (as long as you get the joke). Here are some of the characters and memes that the channel has spawned or popularised.

Hyrule Warriors v3, low-res pixel style!
Now that all the DLC characters have been announced, here’s the final update to my Hyrule Warriors pixel art (check the tag for previous revisions, as well as my speculative pixel art for possible characters). Legends on 3DS has been great value for me, I’m very pleased with the game on the whole, and I can’t wait for the final DLC release.

Lost Rare heroes, low-res pixel style!
As a follow-up to my history of Rare pixels, here’s some characters who missed out on a starring role in a Rareware game. They had some good design work put into them, but their games were either reworked to remove them, or cancelled altogether.
Edson (from Project Dream which eventually became Banjo), Berri (supposed to be the deuteragonist of Twelve Tales: Conker 64), Velvet Dark (Joanna Dark’s sister, cameoed as a multiplayer character and was going to have her own spinoff that was cancelled), Krystal (another planned deuteragonist; when Dinosaur Planet was reworked into Starfox Adventures, Fox was given all her gameplay segments), Sabreman (in his design for the legendary Sabreman Stampede), Lilith (from the late Seavor game Urchin)
Star Trek: The Original Series, low-res pixel style!
TOS isn’t super my thing, but I’m reading lots of Star Trek comics and lots of them are TOS soooooooo it’s fine. I prefer the movies, but still let’s round out the collection of pixel arts, shall we? I knew I wanted Arex and M’Ress from the animated series on here, and with the extra row I had some space so I threw in Nurse Chapel and Yeoman Rand. Why not? More ladies is good.

Star Trek: Enterprise, low-res pixel style!
Enterprise is few people’s favourite show, and I’m no different, but in the interest of completeness here’s the cast in pixel form. There are certainly good points, like the fanservice and Dr. Phlox. Should I have drawn Porthos too? Nah.

I don’t actually play the Layton games, but my wife does. I do love the idea of them and the design, and the characters. The voice acting really charms me too, especially Luke he’s a cutie (but not the American version).

Star Trek: The Original Series movies, low-res pixel style!
I never really cared for TOS, but the movies are good stuff. I like the continuity between the films, and the stories they tell using the history of the show as a basis for these characters. The six of them, together with the associated comics, are like another series of the show, but more modern. I wanted to include M’Ress and Arex from the animated series as they show up in Peter David’s enjoyable comic series set in this era, but decided to keep it to the core movie cast.

Space! The wormhole! Prophets! Pah-wraiths! The Dominion! That one Vulcan crew that plays baseball! Deep Space Nine is ace. So here’s the main characters in their late season uniforms that were borrowed from the TNG movies, except Jake. He doesn’t count.

Say what you will about Voyager, I think it’s pretty great. And at least half of its main characters are fun and interesting. Especially once Kes leaves and Seven comes on board. Space!

Space! I love all the Next Gen-era shows, so here’s the best little bridge crew in the whole Alpha Quadrant in all their pixel glory. Of course Picard has his casual jacket on!

Modern Bubsy, low-res pixel style!
Modern Bubsy is a project that started with the indie game Space Funeral 4. SqrlyJack imagined what classic gaming failure Bubsy would be up to years later and the concept (also inspired by other Bubsy speculation) grew into an enthralling history including the games’ traumatic meta-textual making-of process, a gender transition, and contact with other 90s game mascots. It’s more than the shock humour you might expect by seeing it; Modern Bubsy is a deep and fascinating revitalisation of the character that may sort of kind of have the implicit approval of the original creator. What could possibly go wrong?
This pixel art is based on this post showing the “main characters” of Bubsy’s “current” life. Some explanation is required though…
Good Guys: Wild Woody is another failed 90s mascot, with a single Sega CD game to his name. Conker the Squirrel is one of Rare’s well-known mascots but in hard times, and now Bubsy’s boyfriend. Bubsy herself is down on her luck but is getting by. Bubsy/Bubster is another alternate take on the character from another Tumblr, and who is actually the son of “our” Bubsy. Oblivia is a character created for the animated series pilot, loosely based on the plot of the second game.
Bad Guys: Old School T represents Retroism/Tommo, the company that currently owns the Bubsy IP and who recently half-arsedly released the first two games on Steam. Sanic is a nightmarish version of Sonic from Space Funeral 4 based on Bubsy’s recollections of him tormenting her? I think? The Woolies are the alien antagonists of the first game and Bubsy 3D, who SqrlyJack also redesigned for SF4. Dr. Virgil Reality is the dweeb who invented the MacGuffin in Bubsy II/the animated pilot, and is now a rich Steve Jobs ripoff. Grubsy is Bubsy’s nasty brother, based on the P2 colouration in the first game; he is accompanied by the spirits of his dead children, Terri and Terry.
This is my submission for the Uniqlo “design a Nintendo t-shirt” contest thing. I call it “Pixels on the Great Sea”; obviously, it’s based on The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. I’m queueing this up to post after the contest submissions have finished, so you can’t steal my sweet art and win the contest.
This is the first pixel art I’ve done that puts the characters in some kind of setting. Link and Tetra are aboard the King of Red Lions, and they’re being watched from an island by the Fishman, Makar, Medli, and Tingle. In case you couldn’t tell.

Playing this game again, I’ve come to appreciate the group dynamic is has going on. Especially in the Krome Studios version where you can pan around the Rogue Shadow between missions and see them all hanging out.
