[Review] Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 (PS3)

Despite being generally maligned, I liked this a lot better than the first game! Spoilers and content warning for self-harm.

[Review] Brütal Legend (PS3)

image

A strongly heavy metal-themed open world action adventure, with a mediocre RTS mode that drags it down a bit.

Getting back to X-Men movie tie-in games: It may be cliche in this case, but I enjoyed this one more than the movie!

[Review] Lego Batman: The Videogame (PS3)

image

A long while ago I played the PSP version of this game by myself. Now my spouse and I played it together, the way these games are arguably meant to be experienced.

Bloodrayne Betrayal is brutal, bloody, and brilliant. Also beautiful, bellicose, bombastic… bespoke…

[Review] Demon’s Souls (PS3)

image

In what has become an annual tradition, I played another of From’s games for the first time. Demon’s Souls is slightly less refined than later instalments, but all the important factors are intact, making for a satisfying time.

[Review] Star Trek (PS3)

image

I’ve been reading a bunch of Kelvin comics from the latest Star Trek comics Humble Bundle, and they acknowledge the events of this game, which made me keen to experience it. In terms of being a performed piece of media with all the main cast reprising their roles, it’s almost like another movie in this series. A really long, boring movie with a ton of shooting.

[Review] Sega Superstars Tennis (PS3/Wii/DS)

image

After playing Sumo’s two Sega crossover racing games, I decided to check out their earlier entry in the larger “Sega Superstars” series, despite having had negative feelings about tennis games in the past. As it turns out, playing tennis matches is my least favourite part of this game.

[Review] Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Republic Heroes (PS3)

image

Since I’ve been watching The Clone Wars, I thought I’d check out its primary tie-in game. As an action game it’s mediocre, and as a representation of the show it’s messy. Is there anything to like? Ummmmmm

[Review] Sonic Generations (PS3/3DS)

image

After falling for Sonic Rush I intended to pursue its lineage through Rush Adventure and Colours DS, before finishing at Generations 3DS as the final evolution of the formula under Dimps. I had to move the schedule up though, for the Streetpass opportunities that my trip to Japan afforded me. Consequently I played through the 3DS version while over there, then followed it with the console version when I got back.

[Review] Dark Souls (PS3)

image

Dark Souls is of course known as an unforgiving and perilous game experience. Having watched complete Let’s Plays of 2 and 3, however, I felt I had enough familiarity with the mechanics and what to expect that I was confident. This did help me get over some initial barriers in the game so it helped, but I still did get the Dark Souls ExperienceTM; for one, a lot of the challenge is execution that stems from the player’s mastery of the controls. For another, Dark Souls 1 is actually missing some refinements or mechanics are otherwise changed in the sequels so I still felt out of my depth at first. And of course, I had never seen anything of the content of the game, so I had to come to grips with the level designs and boss patterns myself.

[Review] Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars (PS3/3DS)

image

Here’s a Lego game. The episodic structure of the TV show lends itself well to a level-based game like this, but my relative unfamiliarity with the source material rendered it slightly unrelatable on top of the disconnected structure undermining the storytelling. I liked the more modern Lego look and feel for the Star Wars setting, and more versatile characters, but some of the new gimmicks like landing a ship and continuing on foot were lame.

[Review] Minigolf games

image

Quick roundup of minigolf games that I’ve tried out with my brother recently. We found all the real-life courses in our city, then turned to the virtual world. A trend that applies to most of them was that too much content is locked behind single-player progression, or skilful mastery of the games. This makes them bad party games, which is what a mini golf simulation should be.
