[Review] Jupiter & Mars (PS4)

I was expecting Ecco: Defender of the Future; Jupiter & Mars is not that, but it’s a beautiful experience.

[Review] Momonga Pinball Adventures (PS4)

image

Yoku’s Island Express was a delight, and naturally caused me to tee up this game that also enhances pinball mechanics with a story, an adventure, etc. It’s very much on a tinier scale (I think I got through the campaign in an hour) but with a corresponding tinier price.

[Review] Yoku’s Island Express (PS4)

image

I love a good pinball video game, especially when it breaks the limitations of real-life machines. Yoku is the most extreme version of this, fusing pinball mechanics into a large Metroid-style explorable world. This mechanical novelty combined with the glorious look and soundtrack makes for a very special experience indeed.

[Review] Broforce (PS4)

I first played this co-op with my brother, a while ago. Now I’ve had the full wild cheesy experience solo as well.

[Review] Carmageddon: Max Damage (PS4)

image

How does a relic like Carmageddon survive in the modern era? This game doesn’t answer that question because it does nothing whatsoever to advance beyond the retrograde sensibilities that made it “subversive” in 1997.

[Review] Spyro Reignited Trilogy (PS4)

I played the rest, then played the best. This remake collection was a great way to round out a Spyro retrospective, as it shows that the original games have aged very well.

[Review] Trials Fusion (PS4)

image

It’s almost five years ago that I played Trials Frontier, the mobile companion to this game. I assumed at that time that I wouldn’t enjoy it as much, and I was right!

[Review] Hover (PS4)

image

As Jet Set Radio Future is one of my all-time favourites, any game that draws inspiration from it is going to get my attention. Despite its low-budget indie status, Hover manages to evolve the formula and create an exceedingly fun experience that I won’t soon forget.

[Review] Bloodborne (PS4)

image

Since I took on Dark Souls last October, I chose Bloodborne for this October. They’re built on the same template (in fact, many of the words in that review still apply) but Bloodborne makes several mechanical and stylistic changes, which result in a more streamlined and focused game.

[Review] Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens (PS4/3DS)

image

Me and the wife, we’re always playing Lego games. We even did a one-off stream of this one together. With the main Traveler’s Tales studio on Dimensions duty, the development here was handled by TT Fusion, who normally does the handheld ports. So is TFA able to hang with the rest of TT’s output?

[Review] N++ (PS4)

image

Funny to think I complained about this being a PS4 exclusive when I reviewed its predecessor. Now I do have a PS4, and the game has gone multiplatform. I actually bought it digitally before I even had the console, but only just now got to playing it. Oh it’s great by the way!

[Review] Overcooked (PS4)

image

I played this with my little brother over a period of weeks. Co-op is really the best way to play this frantic task management game, and the inventive level design and objective requirements keep you on your toes constantly. It can get stressful but the satisfaction of a job well done is worth it.

[Review] Diablo III (PS4)

image

Diablo 3 is a good game to relax to. It’s accessible—especially on console—it’s satisfying, and it’s not too demanding. At least, when you don’t know how to change the difficulty.

[Review] Minigolf games

image

Quick roundup of minigolf games that I’ve tried out with my brother recently. We found all the real-life courses in our city, then turned to the virtual world. A trend that applies to most of them was that too much content is locked behind single-player progression, or skilful mastery of the games. This makes them bad party games, which is what a mini golf simulation should be.

[Review] Yooka-Laylee (PS4)

image

I hate the need to preface this, but this game has had some amount of backlash and negativity. Having been exposed to that, I hope I haven’t become defensive about it. But I think I’m being honest and true when I say that Yooka-Laylee was a transportive experience that felt great to play, made me smile and feel like a kid again.
