[Review] Lego Marvel’s Avengers (Wii U)

image

Another day, another Lego game played by my spouse and I. I like the superhero ones for the bombastic powers and expansive hubs you can fly around, not to mention the vast cavalcade of whacky characters to discover. I don’t have any particular care for the content but we still had a good time.

[Review] Metagal (PSVita)

image

Here’s another Mega Man-inspired indie game. Metagal is low-budget but enjoyable with a mostly-female cast, and some nice pixel art. I especially liked playing as the extra unlockable characters.

[Review] 20XX (PS4)

image

20XX is a pretty cool game. It mashes together the sidescrolling gameplay of Rockman (particularly the X and Zero series) with a roguelike structure, and pulls it off well.

[Review] Rockman & Forte (SNES)

image

My pick for Game Club was this instalment in the Classic Mega Man series. It feels oddly split in its design and is of course quite difficult, but has redeeming qualities that made it the most appealing of any Classic series game, and this was borne out in my experience.

[Review] Pic-a-Pix Colour (3DS)

image

I’ve been running short of Jupiter Picross games to play on 3DS (the absolute best place to play these type of logic puzzle games), so I’ve turned to third parties for a fix. Pic-a-Pix is a perfectly cromulent game with good controls, even if the pictures turn out a bit ugly.

[Review] Radical Dreamers (SNES)

image

Now that I’m finally checking out other instalments in the Chrono series, it’s time for the only one that’s not a JRPG. It can be obtuse but I appreciated what its format allowed it to do.

[Review] Shamu’s Deep Sea Adventures (PS2)

image

Alongside the DS version, I also played the console iteration of SDSA. It’s a strange awkward thing, a sort of beat-em-up/collectathon/2.5D sidescroller. It’s not very Ecco-like but you have to give Sand Grain credit for trying something different even if it didn’t totally succeed.

[Review] Shamu’s Deep Sea Adventures (DS)

The dolphin journeys continue! Looking past the propping up of Seaworld’s oppression, this is a decent aquatic adventure that I had a good time with.

[Review] The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes (3DS)

image

There’s highs and lows to the experience of Tri Force Heroes. The premise seems pretty player-unfriendly, but by connecting with an active online community I was able to wring some enjoyment from it.

[Review] Jupiter & Mars (PS4)

I was expecting Ecco: Defender of the Future; Jupiter & Mars is not that, but it’s a beautiful experience.

[Review] Star Splash: Shattered Star (Wii U)

image

To kick off a spree of dolphin games, mostly happening on my streams this week (check it out live at twitch.tv/miloscatter or the archives at www.youtube.com/user/Wiseguy934/videos !!) I caught up with this charming Wii U exclusive. It’s a simple little thing, but addictive and fun while it lasts.

[Review] Another Eden (iOS)

image

My friend Gibbon got me on to this game, an indie RPG project that publicised the involvement of Chrono Trigger’s scenario writer Masato Kato and composer Yasunori Mitsuda. Turns out the link was strong indeed, with the game taking pains to insinuate itself as an instalment (technically unofficial) in the Chrono series. Apart from that it’s a nice RPG for the smart device platform, and free-to-play but not exploitative.

[Review] Ristar (SMD)

image

For game club we played our third “non-Sonic game made by Sonic Team”, after Nights and Billy Hatcher. Similarly, Ristar has somewhat of a Sonic feeling but with a heavy focus on a different gameplay hook.

[Review] Xeodrifter (3DS)

Xeodrifter builds on Renegade Kid’s Mutant Mudds to create a gritty, streamlined, miniature Metroid-like adventure. And it does so very well.

[Review] Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros. (3DS)

image

Let’s make this quick so I don’t get too mad. Paper Jam Bros. has all the wit and engaging battle mechanics of previous Mario & Luigi games, but it has had the soul sucked out of it. It squanders the potential of a Paper crossover and exemplifies the blandness of what the Mario series has become.
