Star Trek: Early Voyages, low-res pixel style!
I’ve just read this Marvel comic series from the 90s, and it’s pretty dang good! Expanding on TOS’s original pilot The Cage, it introduces a bunch of new characters to fill out the Pike and Number One staff, and some classic sci-fi adventures ensue. Note that the comic ignores the subtle colour distinction between command and operations jumpers, but I’ve tried to reflect how they appeared in the show’s two pilots.
Christopher Pike, E. Robbins, Spock, Phillip Boyce, Moves-With-Burning-Grace, Nano, Sita Mohindas, José Tyler, Mia Colt, Gabrielle Carlotti
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, low-res pixel style!
I’ve recently read two different comic spinoff series about the Academy. One is a gnarly 90s Marvel comic, giving Nog a supporting cast and some crazy adventures, sometimes tying in to Deep Space Nine. The other is a recent one from IDW set in the universe of the new movies, which continues in the Boldly Go series. Both have fun, diverse casts that I enjoyed drawing!
Omega Squad from the Marvel comic: Kamilah Goldstein, Matthew Decker, Nog, T’Priell/Selke, Pava Ek’Noor Aqabaa, Edam Astrun, Kyethn Zund
The crew from the IDW comic: T’Laan, Lucia Gonzales, Jaylah, Grace Chen, Shev Akria, Vel K’Bentayr

I’ve been reading a bunch of Kelvin comics from the latest Star Trek comics Humble Bundle, and they acknowledge the events of this game, which made me keen to experience it. In terms of being a performed piece of media with all the main cast reprising their roles, it’s almost like another movie in this series. A really long, boring movie with a ton of shooting.
Star Trek Discovery (Season 1), low-res pixel style!
It seems premature to draw this show’s characters when it’s not over yet, but eh, I like ‘em too much. It’s a good show, and a good Star Trek. Here’s the “main cast” of Season 1, plus a couple.
Michael Burnham, Saru, Sylvia Tilly, Paul Stamets, Hugh Culber, Gabriel Lorca, Ash Tyler, L’Rell
Star Trek New Frontier, low-res pixel style!
I really love Peter David’s work on Trek comics over the years. His own subseries, New Frontier, is also great for characters and storytelling that are very Trek but also different and exciting. This pixel art is a bit of a mishmash of characters (and their designs) from the comics Double Time and Turnaround. I mostly wanted to portray the main crew of the Excalibur plus a few hangers-on that were important to those stories.
Mackenzie Calhoun, Elizabeth Shelby, Burgoyne 172, Zak Kebron, Selar, Soleta, Mark McHenry, Robin Lefler, Si Cwan, Kalinda Cwan, Xyon, Morgan Primus, Katerina Mueller, Tania Tobias
Star Trek: The Original Series, low-res pixel style!
TOS isn’t super my thing, but I’m reading lots of Star Trek comics and lots of them are TOS soooooooo it’s fine. I prefer the movies, but still let’s round out the collection of pixel arts, shall we? I knew I wanted Arex and M’Ress from the animated series on here, and with the extra row I had some space so I threw in Nurse Chapel and Yeoman Rand. Why not? More ladies is good.
James Kirk, Spock, Leonard “Bones” McCoy, Montgomery Scott, Nyota Uhura, Hikaru Sulu, Pavel Chekov, Christine Chapel, Janice Rand, Arex, M’Ress
Star Trek: Enterprise, low-res pixel style!
Enterprise is few people’s favourite show, and I’m no different, but in the interest of completeness here’s the cast in pixel form. There are certainly good points, like the fanservice and Dr. Phlox. Should I have drawn Porthos too? Nah.
Jonathan Archer, T’Pol, Charles “Trip” Tucker, Phlox, Malcolm Reed, Hoshi Sato, Travis Mayweather
Star Trek: The Original Series movies, low-res pixel style!
I never really cared for TOS, but the movies are good stuff. I like the continuity between the films, and the stories they tell using the history of the show as a basis for these characters. The six of them, together with the associated comics, are like another series of the show, but more modern. I wanted to include M’Ress and Arex from the animated series as they show up in Peter David’s enjoyable comic series set in this era, but decided to keep it to the core movie cast.
James Kirk, Spock, Leonard “Bones” McCoy, Montgomery Scott, Nyota Uhura, Hikaru Sulu, Pavel Chekov
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, low-res pixel style!
Space! The wormhole! Prophets! Pah-wraiths! The Dominion! That one Vulcan crew that plays baseball! Deep Space Nine is ace. So here’s the main characters in their late season uniforms that were borrowed from the TNG movies, except Jake. He doesn’t count.
Benjamin Sisko, Kira Nerys, Jadzia Dax, Odo, Julian Bashir, Miles O’Brien, Worf, Quark
Star Trek: Voyager, low-res pixel style!
Say what you will about Voyager, I think it’s pretty great. And at least half of its main characters are fun and interesting. Especially once Kes leaves and Seven comes on board. Space!
Kathryn Janeway, Chakotay, Tuvok, B’Elanna Torres, The Doctor, Seven of Nine, Tom Paris, Harry Kim, Neelix
Star Trek: The Next Generation, low-res pixel style!
Space! I love all the Next Gen-era shows, so here’s the best little bridge crew in the whole Alpha Quadrant in all their pixel glory. Of course Picard has his casual jacket on!
Jean-Luc Picard, Will Riker, Data, Beverly Crusher, Deanna Troi, Geordi La Forge, Worf
I’m Mii crazy! Here’s the regular cast of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, which they’ve been playing on the local TV. I love the show and it’s got some great characters. I considered making Next Gen Miis, but I figured it’s probably not as done to death to do DS9.
The hard part is doing the aliens. Some people might be able to do tricky things with eyebrows and such, but I prefer mine to look like real people, especially as in games Miis change expression, thus ruining any faces that have been achieved with such trickery. So I make faces evocative of the characters, hopefully leaving them recognisable even without their most distinctive features of forehead ridges or giant lobes.
